Migration Expert on Teenage Deportations: 'I Have Warned'
An expert on migration issues discusses the strong reactions to teenage deportations and warns that the situation is only the beginning of a larger issue.
The recent teenage deportations in Sweden have triggered significant public outcry and debate. Karin Ödquist Drackner, a migration expert at the Swedish Red Cross, is not surprised by the backlash, suggesting that this phenomenon is merely a precursor to even larger problems ahead. She asserts that the struggles faced by these teenagers are indicative of broader systemic issues within Sweden's immigration policies.
Aftonbladet has reported on several individuals affected by the so-called teenage deportations, highlighting the removal of protections that previously allowed youths to remain in Sweden under ‘particularly distressing circumstances.’ This change was enacted by the Tidö government in collaboration with the Swedish Democrats (SD) in 2023, directly targeting those who have grown up in Sweden, are educated there, and have integrated into society. As these young individuals turn 18, they are now receiving notices that they must leave their families and lives behind, causing distress and uncertainty.
The Swedish Parliament recently voted against halting these deportations despite a proposal aimed at providing relief. Notably, opposition parties like Vänsterpartiet (V), Miljöpartiet (MP), and Centerpartiet (C) voted in favor of the proposal, while the Socialdemocrats (S) chose to abstain. This highlights the divisions within Swedish politics regarding immigration policies and the treatment of young migrants, leaving many to wonder what comes next for those caught in this legal limbo.
