The Catholic Faculty Cannot Elect a New Dean. The Court Granted Brož a Stay of His Dismissal

The Czech Administrative Court has temporarily prevented the Catholic Theological Faculty of Charles University from electing a new dean following a legal stay granted to Jaroslav Brož, who had been dismissed from his position.

The Czech Administrative Court has recently granted a stay of execution regarding Jaroslav Brož's dismissal from his role as dean of the Catholic Theological Faculty at Charles University. This ruling temporarily halts the faculty's ability to elect a new dean, pending a final decision on Brož's appeal against his dismissal. The court's decision reflects ongoing legal disputes within the university's administration and the impact these disputes have on academic governance.

Jaroslav Brož, who had been at the helm of the faculty since May 2024, was first dismissed by the university's former rector, Milena Králíčková, following a recommendation from the academic senate last February. After his dismissal, Brož sought relief from the Municipal Court in Prague, which initially ruled in his favor, reinstating him temporarily. However, he faced another dismissal by the rector in the summer of last year, prompting further legal action from him.

As the situation stands, the Administrative Court has yet to make a final ruling on Brož's case. Until then, the university cannot move forward with selecting a new dean, nor can the former rector appoint any interim leadership for the faculty. This ongoing situation is indicative of the broader challenges facing academic institutions in governance and the intricacies of faculty-level disputes that can impede administrative processes.
