Decisive third round: Iranian delegation heads to Geneva to resume negotiations with Washington

Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, has left Tehran for Geneva to participate in the third round of indirect nuclear talks with the United States.

Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araqchi, flew to Geneva to take part in the third round of indirect nuclear negotiations with the United States, a process that was renewed last month under Omani mediation. Araqchi is leading a high-ranking delegation that includes Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi, along with a team of nuclear and legal experts. Additionally, Kazem Gharib Abadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs, is already in Geneva and has addressed the Conference on Disarmament.

The backdrop to these negotiations includes a significant military buildup by the United States in the Gulf and Middle East, amid increasing threats of military action against Iran should diplomatic efforts fail. In response to the military posture, Iranian President Masoud Barzokian expressed optimism regarding the negotiations, suggesting that there is a hopeful outlook for moving past a period of neither war nor peace. Araqchi emphasized that his country would resume talks with Washington based on the understandings reached in previous rounds.

This resuming of negotiations comes at a critical juncture in international relations, given the precarious state of U.S.-Iran relations and the potential repercussions for regional stability. Diplomatic resolutions are under heightened scrutiny as tensions could easily escalate, affecting not just the parties directly involved but also influencing broader geopolitical dynamics in the region.
