Ghana: Ghana Poised to Develop Sustainable Aviation Fuel Industry ...ICAO Study Reveals

Ghana is well-positioned to develop a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry to reduce carbon emissions in aviation, according to an ICAO study.

According to a recent feasibility study conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), Ghana has significant potential to establish a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) industry, which could play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. The study highlights Ghana's abundant agricultural residues, existing refining infrastructure, and strong regional trade connections that together position the country favorably for developing a viable SAF sector. This initiative is aligned with ICAO's ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in international aviation by the year 2050.

In presenting the findings at a stakeholder workshop in Accra, Ms. Damiana Serafini, an Independent Consultant with ICAO, emphasized that while Ghana has a wealth of potential feedstock suitable for SAF production, these materials are spread out across the nation. The study underlines the need for strategic planning and investment to harness these resources effectively. The emphasis on SAF as an alternative fuel derived from non-petroleum feedstocks is part of a broader global shift towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels in air transportation and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

The development of a robust SAF industry in Ghana could significantly enhance the country's economic prospects, foster job creation, and position it as a leader in sustainable aviation within the African region. Furthermore, it aligns with global environmental initiatives and the increasing demand for cleaner energy sources in the aviation sector, making it a timely and critical endeavor for Ghana and the continent at large.
