Restored Cross of Over 100-Year-Old Church Installed in Kotka โ This is What the Demanding Operation Looked Like
A restored steel cross, weighing approximately 300 kilograms, has been successfully installed on the church tower in Kotka, Finland, as part of a restoration project.
On Wednesday, a four-meter tall restored cross was installed at the church tower of Kotka, Finland, reaching a height of 54 meters. The church, which was built in 1898 and is centrally located on Kotkansaari, had its cross lowered for a thorough restoration, marking a significant event and showcasing meticulous planning given the weather conditions. The installation day saw clear skies and calm winds, ideal for such a delicate procedure, especially considering that heavy snow and wind could have hindered it.
The original wooden cross had deteriorated due to rot, leading to concerns about its lean, although it was confirmed that it was never in danger of falling from the tower. Janne Paaso from Etelรค-Suomen Julkisivupalvelu explained that the previous wooden structure's decay prompted action to restore the cross, ensuring that it remains a vital part of the church's historical significance. The Kotka-Kymin Parish allocated โฌ178,000 for the repair of the cross, emphasizing the community's commitment to preserving their local heritage.
Additionally, alterations were made to the church tower during the restoration, which involved removing a thousand kilograms of concrete from the top, likely to maintain the structural integrity and aesthetic of the historic building. This restoration not only enhances the visual appeal of the church but also strengthens its significance within the community, reflecting collective efforts to safeguard local history and architecture.
