Swede sentenced to ten years in prison for attempted murder

A 20-year-old Swede, Jan Helgesson, has been sentenced to ten years in prison by the Copenhagen City Court for an attempted murder in September 2024.

Jan Helgesson, a 20-year-old from Sweden, has received a ten-year prison sentence for an attempted murder case heard in the Copenhagen City Court. The court found him guilty of traveling to Denmark with the intention of assassinating a member of the gang Loyal To Familia (LTF). Although the murder was not completed, Helgesson's actions demonstrated a clear intent, as he waited in Copenhagen and was allegedly provided with a firearm intended for the attack at Blågårds Plads in the Nørrebro district of the city.

The case highlights the ongoing issue of gang-related violence in Denmark, particularly involving individuals from Sweden who are drawn into such criminal activities. Notably, two men from the biker community were convicted last year, receiving sentences of 15 and 16 years, for organizing the murder attempt, thereby underscoring a network behind the orchestration of violent acts. Helgesson's situation reflects the broader challenges faced by law enforcement in dealing with cross-border crime and gang interactions between Sweden and Denmark.

Upon being sentenced, Helgesson expressed his intention to appeal the verdict, seeking acquittal from the charges. In addition to his prison term, he has been ordered to leave Denmark permanently and is banned from re-entering the country. This case will likely continue to receive attention as it taps into larger discussions about the effectiveness of measures to combat gangs and violent crime in the region, as well as the implications of international criminal collaboration.
