High incidence of influenza in Latvia

Influenza levels remain high in Latvia, with significant cases reported especially in Jelgava and Rēzekne.

Influenza continues to spread at high levels in Latvia, as reported by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). The most intense rates of flu incidence have been recorded in Jelgava and Rēzekne, where cases surpassed 700 per 100,000 inhabitants. During the eighth week of monitoring across 43 family physician practices, there were 174 confirmed flu cases, averaging 250.6 cases per 100,000 residents, a slight decrease from the previous week, which saw 193 cases.

As in previous seasons, children under the age of 14 exhibit a higher incidence of the flu. However, last week saw a decrease in illness across all age groups except for those aged 65 and older. There have also been six reported deaths among patients confirmed to have influenza in the past week. Since the start of the flu season, a total of 28 deaths have been recorded, with most victims over the age of 80 and suffering from chronic underlying conditions, highlighting the severe implications of flu for vulnerable populations.

The ongoing situation underscores the importance of monitoring and public health interventions as the flu season progresses. While there is a slight decrease in cases, the overall high incidence and reported fatalities point to the need for continued vigilance, especially among at-risk groups. The healthcare system must remain prepared to address further developments in flu prevalence and its consequences for public health in Latvia.
