The Accident Investigation Center launches an investigation into the oil spill in Kemi's Ajos

The Finnish Accident Investigation Center has initiated a safety investigation into an oil spill incident that occurred in Kemi's Ajos harbor.

The Finnish Accident Investigation Center (AIT) has commenced a safety investigation regarding an oil spill incident that took place in the harbor of Kemi's Ajos when approximately 10 cubic meters of light fuel oil was released from the harbor icebreaker tug, Jääsalo, in mid-February. Although the spill is not classified as catastrophic, it has been deemed significant under EU directives, as stated by the lead investigator, Ilkka Kervinen.

Kervinen noted that international regulations influenced the decision to initiate this investigation. The AIT has been able to gather substantial information from other authorities, which has facilitated a thorough understanding of the event. The investigation will focus on the chain of events leading to the oil spill, the response actions taken, and the collaboration practices among officials as well as the functions of permitting and oversight authorities.

The Baltic Sea is described as a unique maritime area, where oil spill response, particularly in winter conditions, poses considerable challenges. Kervinen mentioned that expertise in responding to such incidents under these varying conditions is limited to Finland and Sweden. This investigation presents an opportunity to better comprehend the complexities involved in oil spill management in the region and to enhance preventive measures in the future.
