Louvre Museum: New Director is Versailles Palace President Christophe Leribault
Christophe Leribault, the President of the Palace of Versailles, has been appointed as the new director of the Louvre Museum following the resignation of Laurence des Cars.
Christophe Leribault, currently serving as the President of the Palace of Versailles, has officially been appointed as the new head of the Louvre Museum. This decision comes from French President Emmanuel Macron after the resignation of the previous director, Laurence des Cars, who had been in her position since 2021. Given Leribault's extensive background in the arts, this appointment signals a continuation of the Louvre’s commitment to maintaining its status as a leading cultural institution.
Previously, Leribault was the director of the Musée d'Orsay, a role from which he garnered significant experience in managing one of France's premier art collections. He holds a degree from the Louvre School and is also a respected professor of Art History. In addition, in 2023, he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, succeeding renowned figure Pierre Cardin, which reinforces his position as a leading authority in the art world.
Leribault's new role at the Louvre raises expectations for innovative programming and enhanced visitor engagement, especially with his background in curating significant exhibitions at the Musée d'Orsay. The transition comes at a time when the Louvre continues to evolve in its approach to modern art and historical collections, and Leribault's leadership is anticipated to help navigate these changes smoothly, upholding the museum’s prestigious legacy while also appealing to contemporary audiences.
