Tourism: Munich is booming even without Adele and the European Football Championship
Despite the absence of major events like the European Football Championship and concerts by Adele, Munich's tourism sector has shown remarkable resilience and stability in 2025, maintaining nearly the same record levels of visitors as in the previous year.
Munich's tourism sector has demonstrated significant resilience in 2025, as highlighted by the new economic director Christian Scharpf during his first presentation of the city's tourism statistics. Scharpf confidently reported that the number of visitors in Munich has stabilized at a high level, achieving almost the same results as the exceptional tourist year of 2024, despite the lack of major events such as the European Football Championship and summer concerts featuring international artists like Adele. This steady performance showcases the city's enduring appeal as a destination.
The statistics present a vivid picture of Munich's robust tourism landscape, with 9.3 million guests checking into commercial lodging establishments, representing a slight increase of 0.3 percent from the previous year. These visitors contributed to 19.7 million overnight stays, which is only a marginal decrease of 0.2 percent. The average duration of stay remained stable at 2.1 days, indicating that tourists have continued to enjoy extended visits to the city.
Interestingly, the distribution of overnight stays throughout the year revealed new records set in six months, including January and various spring and autumn months. This highlights not only a consistent influx of tourists year-round but also the effectiveness of local tourism initiatives that promote Munich as a year-round destination, adapting to changes in the events landscape without diminishing the city's attractiveness to visitors.
