Thousands of Tourists Stuck at Lake Baikal as Ice Road Conditions Remain Hazardous
Over 3,000 tourists are stranded on Olkhon Island in Lake Baikal due to unsafe ice road conditions, with authorities working to ensure essential supplies are available.
Authorities in the Irkutsk region of Far East Russia reported that over 3,000 tourists are currently stranded on Olkhon Island, located within Lake Baikal, the world's deepest freshwater lake. Governor Igor Kobzev confirmed that approximately 250 of those trapped are foreign visitors and assured that supplies of food and medications are adequate for the stranded tourists. The situation arises as the usual winter ice roads to the island have not been officially opened due to hazardous ice conditions.
Lake Baikal typically freezes over between January and April, during which time the thick, clear ice attracts numerous visitors exploring the regionβs unique winter landscapes. Normally, ice roads are operational in February and March, allowing for safe passage to Olkhon Island. However, this year, many routes remain perilous and could cause serious accidents, exemplified by the recent drowning of seven Chinese tourists and a Russian man when their vehicle fell through the thin ice.
Governor Kobzev has urged caution, emphasizing that until an official ice road is established, travel to the island should be avoided. The stranded tourists are advised to remain patient while local authorities manage logistics to ensure their safety and comfort during this unexpected situation. This event highlights the challenges that can arise in popular winter destinations and underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines during extreme weather conditions.
