The Tidö Parties: One Month in Prison Can Lead to Deportation

The Tidö Parties propose new rules that facilitate the deportation of foreign criminals sentenced to prison in Sweden.

The Tidö Parties, comprising the Swedish government and the Sweden Democrats (SD), are advocating for changes in immigration laws that would make it easier to deport foreign nationals convicted of crimes in Sweden. Under the proposed rules, foreign nationals sentenced to at least one month in prison could be deported, a significant reduction from the current threshold of six months. Johan Forssell, the Minister for Migration, expressed a decisive stance, indicating a shift from a lenient approach to a more stringent immigration enforcement policy.

This change aims to address what the Tidö Parties perceive as an inadequate handling of foreign criminals in Sweden, with Forssell stating that the country has previously treated these offenders with "kid gloves". Ludvig Aspling, the migration policy spokesperson for the Sweden Democrats, echoed this sentiment during a press conference, emphasizing the need for stronger measures against foreign criminal activities in Sweden. The announcement indicates a move towards more aggressive deportation policies and reflects ongoing debates within Swedish politics regarding immigration and crime.

With new legislation, prosecutors will also have a mandated duty to seek deportation in such cases, increasing the potential for a sixfold rise in deportations of foreign citizens. This shift in policy reflects the current government’s focus on reducing crime and enforcing stricter immigration controls, a stance that has stirred discussions among various political factions in Sweden regarding the balance between public safety and human rights.
