Nigeria, 106 others back UN vote voicing support for Ukraine
Nigeria joined 106 other countries in supporting Ukraine during a UN General Assembly vote on the anniversary of Russia's invasion.
On February 24, 2023, Nigeria, alongside 106 other members of the United Nations, expressed its support for Ukraine in an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly. This vote coincided with the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and resulted in the adoption of a resolution entitled "Support for lasting peace in Ukraine". The resolution was passed with 107 nations in favor, while 12 opposed and 51 abstained, highlighting a significant international consensus advocating for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The adopted resolution calls for a comprehensive and lasting peace, alongside an immediate ceasefire and the return of civilians forcibly removed from their homes during the conflict. Key aspects of the resolution include the commitment to the principles of sovereignty and independence, aiming to support Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock emphasized that the ongoing conflict has disrupted the dreams for peace in Europe and underscored the importance of global solidarity in supporting Ukraine's plight.
This vote represents a critical moment in international relations, showcasing the collective pressure being exerted on Russia amid ongoing hostilities. As countries like Nigeria demonstrate their support for Ukraine, it raises questions about the implications for diplomatic relations and future resolutions in the context of the UN, particularly regarding the nations that abstained or voted against the resolution. Such dynamics reflect broader geopolitical tensions and the ongoing humanitarian crisis stemming from the conflict in Ukraine.
