150 yachts and a plane for Kadyrov: how Russia deceived everyone about 8 billion dollars
A recent analysis reveals that Russian companies exploited secret territories in the British islands to conduct major trade, including transactions linked to Kremlin-supported projects and Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
A comprehensive analysis of 29,000 transactions indicates that Russian firms have utilized discreet territories in the British islands to facilitate substantial commerce worth approximately 8 billion dollars. The report highlights various dealings, particularly concerning yachts associated with allies of Vladimir Putin and drilling equipment intended for Kremlin-backed oil projects. Notably, a plane linked to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov also emerged in the transactions, illustrating the diverse nature of these enforcement evasion strategies.
The investigation pinpointed four specific territories where over 95% of the detected trade took place: the British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, and Gibraltar. The majority of these transactions were completed shortly after international sanctions were implemented in 2022, revealing the immediate response of Russian entities to adapt to new financial environments. According to Transparency International, many more transactions have occurred even more recently, extending the timeline of this illicit commercial activity.
Among the contracts specifically categorized under 'yacht' during 2022, there were 65 dealings that frequently involved offshore entities, reflecting a strategic maneuvering by Russian stakeholders to maintain access to wealth despite growing international restrictions. This situation prompts critical questions about the effectiveness of sanctions and reveals an intricate web of financial networks that enable the continuation of high-value trades despite global condemnation of the Russian governmentβs actions.
