Young people with disabilities continue to participate in the organization of the Latvian basketball team’s games
Youth with disabilities will continue to assist in organizing the Latvian men's basketball team's games, as confirmed by the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS).
The involvement of young people with disabilities in the organization of events for the Latvian men's basketball team marks a significant step towards inclusivity in sports. This initiative, supported by the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS) and the non-governmental organization 'Apeirons', allows these young individuals to participate actively in public life and engage in significant sporting events. The collaborative efforts began over two years ago and have opened up new opportunities for several individuals with special needs.
As the Latvian national team prepares to face the Polish team in a World Cup qualifying match at 'Xiaomi Arena' in Riga, approximately 40 volunteers will assist in the event, including at least five young people with disabilities. This diverse group of volunteers reflects a commitment to inclusivity in the sporting community, and the involvement of these individuals highlights the value of diverse experiences in enriching sports events.
Nellija Elza Cunska, the coordinator for the volunteers, emphasizes the importance of preparation and adaptability in volunteer roles. Regular meetings are held before each game to ensure that everyone is ready for their responsibilities. This initiative not only provides meaningful experiences for the young volunteers but also promotes a greater understanding and acceptance of diversity within society, showcasing how sports can bridge gaps and foster community spirit.
