Sheep Pox: Private Veterinarians Join the Fight – The Terms, Participation Process, and Fees
The Greek government is activating a new program that allows private veterinarians to assist in controlling the spread of sheep pox under a framework established in late 2025.
The Greek Ministry of Rural Development has announced the activation of a new initiative involving authorized private veterinarians to aid in combating sheep pox outbreaks. This comes in response to urgent measures aimed at controlling the disease, which affects sheep and goats. Under the framework established by a joint ministerial decision, these veterinarians will play a critical role in various tasks, including clinical surveillance of livestock, sample collection for laboratory diagnostics, epidemiological data collection, disinfection of infected farms, and overseeing the humane euthanasia and burial of infected animals.
The process for private veterinarians to participate is straightforward. Regional authorities will submit a justified proposal for each veterinarian interested in joining the effort, which is expected to enhance the efficiency of disease control measures. The initiative will not only strengthen local veterinary resources but also improve the overall response to animal health crises, showcasing the collaboration between public health initiatives and the private sector.
This program highlights the Greek government's proactive approach to managing animal diseases and ensuring food safety. As the spread of sheep pox can significantly impact livestock populations and the agricultural economy, the involvement of private veterinarians could lead to better-prepared responses and mitigate potential losses in the farming sector, ensuring stability for local farmers and the market overall.
