Poland's Minister of Education appealed to local governments to reconsider school closures as data shows a significant decline in the number of schools since 2019.
Recent data from Poland's Ministry of National Education indicates that local authorities have significantly reduced the number of schools in recent years. Between 2019 and 2020, municipalities requested to close 351 institutions, of which 274 were ultimately approved. The trend continued with 168 schools closed in the 2020/2021 academic year, 92 in 2022/2023, and 57 in 2023/2024, amounting to a total of 891 schools closed since 2019, including 633 primary schools. The minister noted that the data for 2025/2026 is incomplete but demonstrates concerning patterns up to the present.
