After a turbulent year, Australia’s Khaled Sabsabi will present not one but two works at the Venice Biennale
Khaled Sabsabi will showcase two major works at the Venice Biennale, focusing on themes of spirituality, migration, and shared humanity.
Khaled Sabsabi, alongside curator Michael Dagostino, will represent Australia at the Venice Biennale with two significant works that delve into themes of spirituality, migration, and the unity of humanity. After experiencing a controversial period of being ousted and then reinstated, their participation aims to contribute to a 'nurturing experience' following a divisive chapter in Australia’s history at the festival. The works are intended to foster connection and understanding among attendees, drawing from Sabsabi’s Sufi Muslim background.
One of the highlighted pieces, titled 'conference of one’s self', is designed as a multisensory invitation for all individuals, regardless of their faith or background, to gather and reflect on our collective humanity. This communal engagement aims to transcend cultural and religious divides, emphasizing our shared experiences as human beings. Notably, the project's inclusive approach resonates powerfully in a global landscape often marked by division and strife.
Additionally, the duo plans to introduce a crowd-funded component, reflecting a grassroots engagement with art that evokes further questions about accessibility and inclusion in the contemporary art scene. By presenting their works at one of the most prestigious art events globally, Sabsabi and Dagostino not only highlight the rich cultural narratives of Australia but also invite a broader conversation about the role of art in connecting people amidst challenging societal dynamics.
