Delegate who survived accident with police vehicle receives dose of polylaminin in an attempt to walk again
Delegate Leonardo Sanches, paralyzed after a car accident, has received polylaminin treatment, becoming the first individual in Goiás to access this potentially life-altering therapy.
Leonardo Sanches, a 44-year-old delegate from Goiás, Brazil, became tetraplegic following a tragic car accident on the GO-330 in July 2025, which also claimed the lives of two companions. In a landmark case, he has received polylaminin, an experimental substance aimed at spinal cord injury treatment, ruling by the court enabling him to access this rare therapy. This makes Sanches the first person in Goiás to receive polylaminin, a significant step in his rehabilitation journey.
Following the accident, which involved other casualties, including a 19-year-old police intern, Sanches's life drastically changed as he faced the challenges of paralysis. With no prior cases of polylaminin treatment in the region, his case sets a precedent in Brazil, highlighting the potential of innovative therapies in treating severe spinal injuries. The treatment was administered at the Dr. Henrique Santillo State Center for Rehabilitation, by a specialized team from Rio de Janeiro, showcasing the collaboration within Brazilian healthcare to aid those affected by debilitating conditions.
The decision to provide Sanches with polylaminin not only opens doors for his personal recovery but also holds broader implications for the medical field in Brazil. نجاح هذا العلاج يمكن أن يشجع المزيد من الأبحاث والاستثمارات في علاجات الإصابات النخاع الشوكي، مما يغير مسار كفاح المرضى في جميع أنحاء البلاد.
