Reiska: Academic freedom is very strong in Estonia

Priit Reiska, the incoming rector of Tallinn University, stated that academic freedom is thriving in Estonia but emphasized the importance of maintaining the uniqueness of different universities.

Priit Reiska, who is set to become the rector of Tallinn University, recently shared his views on the state of academic freedom in Estonia during a program titled 'Live from the News House'. He expressed a strong belief that academic freedom is doing well in the Estonian academic landscape. However, he highlighted a critical point regarding the diversity of universities, indicating that this uniqueness needs to be preserved to sustain the quality and integrity of academic freedom.

Reiska pointed out that Tallinn University has somewhat downplayed its foundational mission of training teachers. While the university is known for various innovative initiatives, he believes that the teacher training aspect should not be overshadowed. There has been a notable increase in interest among Estonian youth in becoming teachers, suggesting a potential resurgence in the perception of teaching as a profession. He encourages the university to fully embrace its role as a leading educator in teacher training, aligning with the growing aspirations of students who seek to enter this field.

In Reiska's view, this is an opportune moment for Tallinn University to reposition itself more prominently in the teacher training arena. By emphasizing its commitment to producing quality educators, the university can enhance its reputation and address the educational needs of the youth more effectively. By acknowledging its strengths and focusing on them, Tallinn University can better serve both its students and the broader educational landscape in Estonia.
