Greenland Interested in Eastern Finland's Lessons – Wants More Digital Opportunities for Youth in Remote Areas, Despite Internet Struggles

Greenland's Ministry of Education and Culture is seeking to enhance digital skills and opportunities for youth in remote areas by learning from Eastern Finland's initiatives.

Greenland has expressed significant interest in the educational projects of Eastern Finland, particularly in how these initiatives address the needs of residents in sparsely populated areas. A delegation from Greenland's Ministry of Education and Culture visited Savonia University of Applied Sciences in Kuopio, where they explored solutions to broaden work and leisure opportunities for local youth, with an intention to prevent the migration of young people to urban centers. This collaboration aims to harness the gaming sector as a medium to connect youth with potential job skills and activities in their hometowns.

One of the critical goals of this project is to increase digital competencies in Greenland, as the region currently lacks IT and technology education programs. According to Cathrine Meldgaard Jensen, head of a division within Greenland's Ministry of Education and Culture, the need for digital skills is pressing, given that the territory has no local resources for training in this field. Greenland’s engagement in the project indicates a strategic move towards fostering a self-sufficient workforce that can meet local demands for digital expertise without the perennial reliance on foreign skills.

By implementing these educational initiatives, Greenland hopes to cultivate a new generation of digitally literate individuals who can contribute to their local economy while inspiring youth to remain in their communities. This partnership with Finnish institutions represents a significant step toward fostering innovation and sustainability in remote regions, paving the way for a more robust future where digital skills are integral to community development and connection.
