HS: Turtiaiset have vanished to Russia – the housing company threatens to seize the apartment

The housing company plans to take former MP Ano Turtiais and his wife Minna Turtiais's apartment if they do not pay overdue housing fees.

Former Finnish MP Ano Turtiais and his wife Minna have allegedly fled to Russia, leaving behind considerable debts, including overdue housing fees totaling €2,500. The housing company in Mikkeli has given them a week to pay these outstanding fees or face the potential seizure of their 39 square meter apartment located near Mikkeli center. The company has indicated that if the couple fails to meet this deadline, they will proceed to manage the apartment and potentially rent it out to recover their losses.

Turtiais, who has previously received political asylum in Russia, is reported to be burdened by over €120,000 in various debts, as disclosed by Ilta-Sanomat (IS) last November. This mounting financial pressure includes debts owed to collection agencies and other creditors such as Bank Norwegian, Aktia, and the law firm Kolster Oy, in addition to over €30,000 in group funding that the Finnish parliament has demanded back. The financial situation of the Turtiais couple reflects a stark contrast to their previous political status in Finland.

The implications of this situation extend beyond personal finance; they hint at broader themes of political exile, financial accountability, and the potential impact on housing policies in Finland. As Turtiais's case garners attention, it also raises questions about the responsibilities of politicians towards their financial obligations and the impact of political asylum on individual accountability in domestic affairs.
