Did you see? This seaside object has become a true winter ice sculpture gallery
A winter ice sculpture gallery has formed around the historic dock in Šventoji, revealing its rich past and future potential.
Famous Palanga photographer Aldas Kazlauskas shares stunning winter seaside images and details about the historical dock of Šventoji. He describes the location, which is now covered in snow and ice, as a true gallery of winter ice sculptures, hinting at the dock's fascinating historical significance. Once extending 780 meters into the sea back in 1939, this pier is notably longer than the famous Palanga Bridge, which measures only 470 meters.
Kazlauskas highlights that many may not know that the port of Šventoji was a serious competitor to Klaipėda and Rīga during the 17th century. While today the dock appears encased in a thick layer of ice, there are ambitious plans to revive the port's infrastructure. These plans aim to restore Šventoji as a vibrant and safe harbor for fishermen, sailors, and marine tourism, indicating a bright future for the historic site.
The transformation of the dock into a winter landscape not only serves as a captivating visual celebration of the area's history but also points toward the community's aspirations for economic renewal through tourism and maritime activities. As the region seeks to reclaim its past glory, it highlights the balance between honoring historical significance and pursuing modern development.
