Washington Requests Ukraine to Consider US Economic Interests When Attacking Russian Infrastructure

The US has urged Ukraine to consider American economic interests while conducting attacks on Russian infrastructure, particularly in light of Kazakhstan's oil exports.

On the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Ukraine ambassador to the US revealed that Washington had reached out to Kyiv to address concerns regarding American and Kazakh economic interests affected by Ukrainian military actions. During discussions, the Ukrainian ambassador, Oksana Markarova, noted that this outreach was not a request for Ukraine to refrain from targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure but rather was articulated due to the implications for American economic interests in the region.

The ambassador highlighted the significance of Kazakhstan's oil exports, which are facilitated through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium and involve American oil company Chevron as a major stakeholder. This intricate relationship underscores the United States' vested interests in the stability and security of the region, particularly as developments in Ukraine directly impact oil exports from Kazakhstan, thus affecting American economic entities.

Additionally, the Ukrainian ambassador remarked on past unusual measures taken by the Trump administration to caution Ukraine against military actions perceived as threatening to these economic interests. This context indicates a continuous balancing act the US faces in supporting Ukraine while safeguarding its own economic priorities, particularly in the strategically important energy sector.
