The Philharmonic 'From Classicism to Today' at the Athens Conservatory
The upcoming concert by the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra will journey through music from classicism to contemporary works, featuring notable pieces and performances.
The Athens Philharmonic Orchestra is set to continue its series of 'Symphonic Evenings' with a concert that traces the evolution of music from the classical era to the present day. Scheduled for the end of February at the John Despotopoulos Amphitheater, this concert will highlight a repertoire that engages with both historical and modern elements. The event aims to attract audiences interested in both tradition and innovation in the musical landscape.
At the helm of this event will be the orchestra's artistic director, conductor Byron Fidetzi, who will lead a performance of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's rare 'Overture: Return from the Foreign', Op. 89. This youthful composition, written when Mendelssohn was just 20 years old, remains a captivating piece that was only performed publicly after the composer's death in 1851. Its inclusion in the concert offers a unique opportunity to explore Mendelssohn's early genius and his lasting impact on music.
Additionally, the concert will showcase 'Three Songs for Soprano and String Orchestra' by contemporary composer Giorgos Zervoudakis, pieces inspired by the poetry of Greek female poets written only two years prior. Originally composed for string quartet, Zervoudakis later expanded the work for a larger ensemble. The soprano soloist for this performance will be Fani Antonelou, who will bring her vocal artistry to the contemporary works, adding depth to the eveningβs offerings and connecting the threads of musical history with modern interpretation.
