The new cable car at Ještěd will feature glass stations and a stop with a footbridge

The planned new cable car at Ještěd will include glass stations and an extended parking garage with additional parking slots.

The new cable car project at Ještěd involves innovative architectural designs that prioritize minimalism and the preservation of the original landscape’s character. The stations will be built on three pillars at heights of 20, 30, and 40 meters, with the intention of restoring the area's morphology, material composition, and vegetation. Jiří Buček from the Liberec studio SIAL described these design principles, emphasizing the importance of integrating the cable car seamlessly into the environment.

The cable car has not been operational since October 2021 after a tragic incident led to the collapse of the original cable car built in 1932-1933. Since then, the City of Liberec purchased the derelict structure from the previous operator, Českých drah, and committed to constructing a completely new cable car. This new system will be longer than its predecessor and builds upon a cable car design concept proposed in the 1930s, which suggested operating a cable car from the current tram terminus location.

Historical documents related to this earlier proposal surfaced, indicating that the concept of a cable car at this location was well thought out back then. The contemporary plans aim to honor this historical vision while enhancing the accessibility of Ještěd's peak, thereby improving tourism and local transport infrastructure in an environmentally considerate manner.
