The hunting gaze and Ronaldo's smile are ideals of beauty for Estonian boys
Estonian boys' ideals of beauty are significantly influenced by social media, which sets often unattainable standards.
A recent study conducted by the Estonian Business School reveals that the ideals of beauty among Estonian boys are increasingly sculpted by social media and digital culture. The research challenges the common stereotype that body image issues primarily afflict girls by demonstrating that boys are equally impacted but in different ways. This insight comes amid a shift in academic focus towards recognizing the pressures faced by males regarding their appearances.
In the study, 45 boys anonymously listed qualities that they find attractive in men. The findings highlight a complex landscape behind what might seem to be superficial traits. While traditional descriptors like 'muscular' and 'tall' were expected, the boys also mentioned more unique characteristics such as having a 'hunting gaze' and 'Ronaldo's smile,' indicating a nuanced set of ideals shaped by celebrity culture and peer influences.
This research sheds light on the pressing need to address body image among boys, underscoring that society's pressure towards certain beauty standards does not discriminate by gender. These findings could help guide future discussions on mental health and self-image in educational settings, advocating for a more inclusive approach that acknowledges the experiences of all students, regardless of gender.
