Will give more power on conditions: - The network must not become a bottleneck
A political party in Norway is pushing for immediate measures to ensure power availability for military and industrial projects facing capacity issues from Statnett.
The Norwegian political party, Fremskrittspartiet, has proposed immediate actions to address the power shortage faced by military bases and industries due to limitations in the electricity network managed by Statnett. A recent report highlighted that Statnett denied increased power use at Ramsund naval station in Troms, a site slated to become a base for new submarines expected to arrive in 2029. The party argues that the government needs to intervene to facilitate power availability, emphasizing that the network's constraints should not hinder development, especially concerning national defense projects.
Concerns over insufficient power capacity have also affected other businesses. For instance, Polarfeed had its request for electricity turned down for a new fish feed factory in Svolvær. Lawmaker Kristoffer Sivertsen of Fremskrittspartiet expressed the urgency of addressing these network constraints, noting that the issues have led to delays and adverse consequences, such as the submarine base not receiving the necessary power supply.
The situation has drawn criticism from the National Audit Office, which has questioned Statnett's handling of power capacity requests. The ongoing challenges highlight a pressing need for solutions that can meet both military and commercial energy demands without further hindrance from the existing power network limitations in Norway.
