Enel says that vehicle collisions with posts increased in 2025 and contributed to power outages in SP
Enel reported a rise in vehicle collisions with electrical posts in Greater São Paulo in 2025, leading to significant power outages.
A recent survey by Enel indicates a notable increase in the number of vehicle accidents involving collisions with electrical posts in Greater São Paulo during 2025. The report highlights that there were 573 incidents across 24 municipalities in the metropolitan area, which marks a 4.73% increase compared to 2024, which recorded 549 incidents. As a result of these accidents, 472,000 customers experienced power outages, although 2024 saw greater overall disruption with nearly 1.8 million consumers affected despite fewer accidents that year.
The state's government officials, including Lula, Tarcísio de Freitas, and Ricardo Nunes, have been directing criticism towards Enel for the recurrent service issues linked to these incidents. In its defense, Enel attributed the rising collision numbers to a combination of severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds, inadequate tree trimming, and now, increasingly frequent vehicle collisions. This ongoing discourse between Enel and the state officials underscores a growing concern regarding infrastructure robustness and the need for improved safety measures.
Moreover, the data reveals that São Paulo city itself recorded 353 accidents in 2025, which is an increase of 23 from the previous year. Among the municipalities, Cotia stands out for a particular rise in incidents, experiencing eight more collisions than in 2024. This uptick highlights the pressing need for enhanced urban planning and better traffic management to mitigate such risks in the future.
