Mercadona distributes 780 million euros among 112,000 workers as a variable bonus for achieving objectives: 5,400 euros extra for 70% of its workforce
Mercadona has allocated 780 million euros to over 112,000 employees as a bonus for meeting objectives, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing workers' purchasing power.
Mercadona, the Spanish supermarket chain, has announced a distribution of 780 million euros among its workforce of more than 112,000 employees based on performance objectives. This initiative is part of the company's broader strategy to improve the purchasing power of its workers, which has seen an investment of over 1 billion euros through various efforts. As part of this distribution, employees with less than four years at the company will receive a bonus of 5,400 euros plus their monthly salary, while those with more tenure are set to receive larger bonuses.
In addition to the performance bonuses, Mercadona has also implemented a salary increase to compensate for the rise in the consumer price index (CPI), which has seen an increase of 2.9% in Spain and 2.2% in Portugal. This salary adjustment is expected to cost the company approximately 125 million euros annually. This move by Mercadona is seen as a strategic effort to enhance employee satisfaction and retention while ensuring that its workforce remains competitive amid economic challenges.
Furthermore, Mercadona made headlines last December when it expanded the working hours for its employees in a bid to create a better work-life balance. These ongoing changes reflect the company's commitment to maintaining a robust and supportive work environment, which is crucial for its operational success and reputation in the retail market.
