Personal doctor travels to Harald in Tenerife

Norwegian King Harald V is receiving treatment for an infection and dehydration in Tenerife, attended by his personal doctor Bjørn Bendz.

Norwegian media reported that King Harald V, aged 89, has been hospitalized in Tenerife due to an infection and dehydration. His personal physician, Bjørn Bendz, traveled to the island to provide care. Although Bendz did not comment on the king's condition, the royal court indicated that King Harald is reportedly in good spirits under the circumstances. Meanwhile, King Harald and Queen Sonja, 88, were vacationing on Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, at the time of the hospitalization.

The royal couple had recently returned from a visit to Milan, Italy, which was reported earlier this month. Crown Prince Haakon, 52, has been designated as Norway's regent in the king's absence until March 6. This latest hospitalization is part of a growing concern regarding King Harald's health, which has been monitored closely by the press. In March 2024, he underwent surgery for the implantation of a pacemaker, highlighting ongoing health challenges faced by the monarch.

The king has had previous health issues requiring hospitalization during his travels. In February 2024, he was also hospitalized in Malaysia during another vacation. The continued health concerns around King Harald V have led to discussions about the future of the Norwegian monarchy and the preparations for a potential regency under Crown Prince Haakon, as the royal family navigates the complexities of royal duties and public expectations during challenging times.
