Wolves have appeared around Nový Bor. Experts advise staying calm during encounters
Wolves have been confirmed in the forests around Nový Bor in Czechia, prompting authorities to advise the public on safety during encounters.
Recent reports confirm the presence of a small group of wolves near Nový Bor in the Českolipsko region of Czechia. The city council has informed residents that a pack of about three wolves is currently roaming the area, particularly in the regions of Pihel, Chotovice, and Janov. Given that wolves are a protected species in Czechia and tend to avoid humans, the council urges people to keep dogs on leashes while in the forest to minimize potential conflicts.
The presence of wolves in the Liberec region is not unprecedented, as their sightings have been documented since at least 2014. Historical reports indicate their presence in various natural reserves, including the Kokořínsko - Máchův kraj protected landscape area, the Jizerské and Lužické mountains, as well as the Krkonošsko region. Monitoring efforts by Hnutí Duha have confirmed wolf sightings and even pups in areas like Kokořínsko and Ralsko, suggesting that the wolf population is gradually reclaiming their territory within this ecosystem.
According to Lucie Moučková from the local environmental department, the return of wolves to the region is a natural phenomenon. Their movement is observed especially as they navigate between the Jizerské mountains and the Ještěd Ridge. The rising reports of encounters highlight the need for increased awareness among locals and visitors to ensure harmonious coexistence with wildlife in the area.
