Ambassador: Ukraine Received a US State Department Demarche Regarding the Attack on Novorossiysk
The Ukrainian ambassador stated that the US State Department advised Ukraine to refrain from targeting American interests, although it did not necessarily discourage attacks on Russian military and energy infrastructure.
On Wednesday, it was reported by the portal "Ukrainska pravda" and CNN that the Ukrainian ambassador, O. Stefanišyna, mentioned that the United States had issued a demarche urging Ukraine to avoid attacks on American interests in the context of the ongoing war with Russia. Despite this advice, Stefanišyna clarified that the US did not recommend that Kyiv entirely abstain from striking Russian military and energy infrastructure. The suggestion was made due to damage to American economic interests caused by recent attacks.
Stefanišyna emphasized the urgency for US lawmakers to pass legislation tightening sanctions against Moscow, arguing that any delay in enacting these measures could be viewed as a victory for Russia. The call for tougher sanctions underscores the continuing geopolitical tensions and the need for a unified response to Russian aggression, particularly in light of the significant economic repercussions for US interests.
In a specific attack, on November 2025, Ukrainian drones targeted critical infrastructure in the Russian port city of Novorossiysk, resulting in damage to an oil terminal, container facilities, and even affecting one ship. Novorossiysk is a pivotal port for oil exports, handling more than 2 million barrels of oil per day, representing about 5% of global maritime shipments, and this incident highlights the strategic importance of such infrastructure amidst the ongoing conflict.
