The UK government has imposed its largest sanctions package on Russia in four years, targeting oil sectors and military supply networks on the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In a significant move to strengthen its stance against Russia, the UK government has unveiled its largest package of sanctions since the onset of the Ukraine war four years ago. Announced during Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper's visit to Kyiv, the new measures include nearly 300 punitive actions aimed primarily at the oil sector and military supply networks. This brings the total number of Russian individuals and entities subject to UK sanctions to over 3,000 since the conflict began, highlighting the UK's commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.
Among the most notable measures is the freezing of assets belonging to Transneft, the state-owned company responsible for operating Russian pipelines. The UK government emphasized the "strategic importance" of the oil sector in bolstering the Russian government, stating that this company exports over 80% of Russia's oil. Transneft had already faced previous Western sanctions following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, and the latest sanctions are seen as both a continuation of this pressure and an escalation in the UK's response to the ongoing conflict.
Furthermore, the UK has targeted what it describes as "illicit oil traders" with strict new measures against one of the major operators of shadow fleets involved in evading international sanctions by transporting Russian oil.
