Anyone with a drive in the UK to see £500 change from April 1
From April 1, UK households and businesses will see the cap on grants for installing electric vehicle chargepoints raised to £500, significantly easing the installation cost for many.
In a recent announcement, the UK Government's Department for Transport revealed that as of April 1, grants for installing electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints will increase from £350 to £500. This increase aims to help renters, flat owners, homeowners without driveways, and small businesses in offsetting the installation costs. The government emphasized that this move is part of their commitment to making electric vehicle ownership more accessible and affordable for everyone, irrespective of whether they have a driveway to accommodate a charger.
Decarbonisation minister Keir Mather stated that the £500 grant typically covers nearly half the installation expense, making home charging even more economical, at just 2p per mile. This initiative coincides with the government’s broader push to decarbonize transportation and promote the adoption of electric vehicles across the country. Mather highlighted that as this funding will be available only for one final year, it encourages individuals and businesses to take action sooner rather than later.
The decision to increase the grant amount indicates an ongoing effort by the UK Government to support the transition to electric vehicles in light of environmental challenges. With the EV market anticipated to expand, this financial support could play a crucial role in meeting carbon reduction targets whilst ensuring that the benefits of electric vehicle ownership don't remain exclusive to those who can afford the high upfront costs of installation.
