"We should not give up" – Remembrance of those killed during the war in Bucha

Residents of Bucha commemorated the victims of war by laying flowers at a memorial, emphasizing the importance of remembering those who lost their lives.

In Bucha, Latvia, a memorial ceremony was held to honor the 422 victims whose remains were found following the temporary occupation by Russian troops. Local residents gathered at a church to lay flowers on a memorial inscribed with the names of the deceased. The priest, Andrijs Holovins, highlighted the tragedy of the youngest victim being just a year and a half old, while the oldest was around 100, emphasizing that these deaths were not a result of armed resistance.

The event underscored the emotional toll of the war on families still grieving their losses. One of the attendees, 67-year-old Petro Mazins, whose son was killed, reflected on the pain that persists four years later, stating that though time has passed, the sorrow feels fresh. He acknowledged the valor of those who died defending their homeland and expressed uncertainty about how many more lives the ongoing conflict may claim.

The comments made by Petro resonated with the community's resolve not to surrender in the face of adversity as he declared, "we should not give up, we will definitely win in any case." This sentiment of solidarity and the call to remember the past reflects a growing world-wide support for Ukraine amidst its continued struggles against the aggressions of war.
