Police Investigate Allegations of Favoritism in University Transfer and Employment for Kim Byeong-ki's Son

Police are investigating allegations against the son of independent lawmaker Kim Byeong-ki regarding favoritism in university transfer and employment opportunities.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has launched an investigation into allegations that the son of Kim Byeong-ki, an independent lawmaker who previously belonged to the Democratic Party, received undue advantages in university transfer and job placement. This marks the first interrogation of Kim's son, who is reported to have been allegedly hired at a small company to satisfy the requirements for transferring to Sungshin University’s contract program, but did not fulfill his work duties as expected. Additionally, there are claims that he obtained a position at the cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb through his father's influence.

The police have been intensifying their investigation as they summoned personnel from Bithumb for questioning earlier and have conducted raids on the company’s headquarters and other locations linked to the case. This comes after a series of actions taken last month, which included raiding the small company and interviewing officials from Sungshin University regarding the transfer allegations. The ongoing probe aims to uncover the veracity of the favoritism claims that have emerged against Kim's family.

Lawmaker Kim Byeong-ki is scheduled to appear before the police as a suspect on the 26th and 27th of this month, raising further concerns regarding potential abuse of power and the implications it has on standards of fairness in education and employment practices in South Korea. The investigation has garnered public attention, highlighting the persistent issues of nepotism within political and academic spheres in the country.
