Coupang Data Leak Incident: 200,000 Accounts from Taiwan Were Compromised

The Coupang data breach revealed that out of 33 million affected customers, approximately 200,000 accounts belonged to Taiwan users.

In a recent revelation about the Coupang data breach incident that transpired last year, it has been confirmed that approximately 200,000 accounts belonging to users from Taiwan were also compromised. This news comes as Coupang, a major South Korean e-commerce platform, provided updates through its parent company, Coupang Inc., and announced the breach through the Coupang Taiwan website. It was noted that the breach involved unauthorized access by a former employee, leading to the identification of these Taiwanese accounts. Cybersecurity firm Mandiant conducted forensic analysis confirming that the former employee only stored data from one account among the compromised accounts.

Following the disclosure of the data breach, Taiwan's Digital Department reported that they had been informed about the incident by Coupang Taiwan on the 23rd. The Digital Department has requested an explanation regarding the circumstances of the breach and immediate provision of related information. According to the report by Coupang, data consisting of the names, email addresses, phone numbers, delivery addresses, and a few recent order details of the affected Taiwanese users were illegally accessed. In response, the Digital Department directed Coupang Taiwan to notify the impacted users, establish dedicated customer service channels, develop compensation plans, and actively resolve the issues stemming from the breach.

In a reassuring statement, Coupang confirmed that no financial, payment data, passwords, or government-issued ID information was accessed from any Taiwanese accounts. The Taiwan Digital Department also indicated plans to conduct further administrative investigations into the breach and are prepared to take legal action if any violations of the Personal Data Protection Act are discovered. This incident underscores how data breaches can have international implications and the necessity for stringent cybersecurity measures, particularly for companies operating across borders.
