Brits working from home issued 'don't get caught out' HMRC warning
The UK tax authority HMRC has issued a warning to remote workers about the importance of properly claiming tax relief on work-related expenses.
The UK tax authority, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), has issued a warning to individuals working from home about being cautious when claiming tax relief on work-related expenses. This notice highlights the possibility of claiming relief on certain expenses incurred while working remotely, which can significantly benefit those eligible. The guidance was shared via a post on social media, encouraging workers to ensure they do not miss out on these potential rebates.
Under the current tax regulations, workers who operate from their homes can claim tax relief on various costs associated with their job. Eligible expenses may include business-related costs, telephone expenses, and a portion of utilities like gas and electricity that are attributable to their workspace. Importantly, HMRC confirmed that individuals could claim for the ongoing tax year and for the four previous years, which opens up the possibility for refunds based on unclaimed amounts from past years.
Claimants have two options for determining their claims; they can either apply for a flat rate of £6 per week or provide detailed accounts of their actual costs. The relief benefits are contingent upon the individual's tax rate. For instance, a worker on the basic tax rate may receive a refund of £1.20 weekly if they claim the flat rate. The HMRC's emphasis on workers ensuring they properly document and claim their eligible expenses aims to prevent potential losses in tax relief and financial resources.
