Moscow warns against plot to arm Kiev with nukes

Russia has cautioned that plans by Western European nations to equip Ukraine with nuclear capabilities could lead to serious global repercussions.

Moscow has raised alarms at the UN Security Council, claiming that Western European powers are pursuing a dangerous path that could exacerbate the Ukraine conflict. The Russian Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, highlighted accusations against the UK and France for allegedly considering the transfer of nuclear technologies or components to Ukraine, which could empower Kiev to develop nuclear capabilities or a 'dirty bomb'. He warned that these actions not only risk escalating tensions but also violate the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Russia's concerns are positioned within a larger narrative of accusing Western powers of undermining peace efforts in Ukraine. By openly stating that their support for Ukraine involves strategic endeavors aimed at Russia’s defeat, Moscow asserts that these European nations are backing warfare rather than resolution. Nebenzia claims that such efforts are irresponsible and destabilizing, raising fears about the potential for a significant escalation in conflict, should Ukraine acquire nuclear capabilities.

This warning comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the region, where military aid from Western countries to Ukraine has been viewed with skepticism and apprehension by Russia. The allegations about nuclear armament, if true, could further strain relations and create a volatile environment that threatens not only regional stability but global security, as nuclear proliferation remains a critical issue on the international agenda.
