Tax Authorities Request Custody of Bolsonaro's Jewelry to Initiate Asset Seizure Process

Brazil's tax authorities have requested custody of jewelry seized from former President Jair Bolsonaro to begin the process of confiscating the assets.

The Brazilian Federal Revenue Service has formally requested the transfer of custody of jewelry seized from former President Jair Bolsonaro, which is currently under the control of the Federal Police. This request is crucial for initiating the tax and customs procedures necessary for the confiscation of the items. The final decision on this custody transfer will be made by Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

The investigation surrounding the jewelry, which was a gift from Saudi Arabia to Bolsonaro, is at risk of prescription, potentially allowing the assets to remain with Bolsonaro. The Revenue Service has expressed the need for custodial responsibility, rather than physical possession, to implement the appropriate customs and tax measures. Presently, the jewelry is secured in a Caixa Econômica Federal branch in Brasília, awaiting further legal proceedings.

As the investigation progresses, there are warnings that the fiscal process regarding the confiscation could expire as soon as October of this year. The Revenue Service has alerted the Court of Accounts of the Union about the urgency of initiating actions before the five-year limitation on the state's right to impose penalties expires. This situation highlights the complexities of asset recovery in political corruption cases and the looming question of accountability for public officials.
