Record Temperatures in Southwestern France: Winter Feels Like May

Southwestern France is experiencing unusually high temperatures for February, with some areas reaching nearly 30°C, reminiscent of spring weather.

The southwestern region of France is currently facing an unusual heat wave for this time of year, with temperatures exceeding 25°C and approaching 30°C in some areas, creating an atmosphere more akin to a spring May rather than winter conditions. In Orthez, located in the Pyrénées region, temperatures recorded 28.3°C, marking a new historical record for February since the local meteorological station was established in 1994, surpassing the previous high of 27.1°C from February 2020. Other cities in the area also reported elevated temperatures: Biarritz at 27°C, Pau at 26°C, Mont-de-Marsan at 25°C, and Toulouse at 22°C, all significantly above the typical values for this season.

The national meteorological service of France, Météo France, has highlighted that this heat wave evokes a May-like climate and underscores the intensity of the phenomenon. Scientists caution that such unusually high temperatures during winter are becoming increasingly common, raising concerns about climate change and its impacts on seasonal weather patterns. As these temperatures deviate from the norm, the implications for agriculture, wildlife, and water resources could be significant, as they challenge the traditional understanding of seasonal climates and necessitate adaptations in various sectors.
