Significant Rise in Reports to Suek

Finnish sports ethics center Suek received a record number of reports on sports violations in 2025, with 460 submissions compared to about 350 in previous years.

In 2025, the Finnish Sports Ethics Center (Suek) reported a remarkable increase in the number of sports violation reports, totaling 460, which significantly surpasses the 350 reports from previous years. This surge in notifications indicates an increasing awareness and responsiveness to ethical violations within the Finnish sports community. Notably, 260 of these reports were related to ethical breaches, marking the highest figure in Suek's ten-year history.

The reports received have mostly been directed to relevant sports federations for further investigation. Suek has taken six cases into its own investigation, categorizing them as serious ethical breaches. Additionally, the organization issued ten reports to authorities, reflecting its proactive stance against sports violations. This demonstrated increase in reporting suggests that individuals are more willing to report unethical behavior, although the challenge remains with anonymous reports, which hinder progress in disciplinary processes since they often lack vital information needed to identify parties involved.

Jouko Ikonen, Suek's investigation manager, indicated that while the occurrence of ethical violations may not have escalated significantly, the improved identification and willingness to report such incidents suggest a cultural shift in the sports community towards greater accountability. The capacity to address these ethical concerns will depend on the ability to ensure transparency and engagement from those involved, particularly in cases that lack the clarity of identifiable complainants.
