New laboratory in PA, Mairi Hip-Hop LAB trains hip-hop collectives with R$ 5,000 per group
The Mairi Hip-Hop LAB in Pará, Brazil, supports local hip-hop collectives with training and financial aid.
The Mairi Hip-Hop LAB is an innovative initiative launched in Pará, Brazil, aimed specifically at hip-hop cultural collectives. The program has brought together six selected groups for an intensive training immersion in Ananindeua, part of the metropolitan region of Belém. Funded by the Aldir Blanc National Policy (PNAB), each collective received a financial subsidy of R$ 5,000 and support for developing action plans that encompass the elements of Breaking, DJ, Graffiti, and MC. This initiative marks a crucial step in bolstering local cultural production and providing resources to an art form that is prominent yet often underfunded in the region.
The Mairi Hip-Hop LAB not only offers financial support but also organizes thematic discussions and workshops related to cultural production, accessibility, cooperativism, and the creative economy. Notable figures in the hip-hop scene, such as Brigitte Liberté, Bruna BG, and Mina Ribeirinha, participated in the event to provide insights and expertise to attendees. This engagement highlights the importance of knowledge sharing within the community and the broader cultural landscape in Brazil, particularly in the context of urban artistic expressions.
The involvement of groups like Selo Aru, which focuses on MC/Rap, Breaking, DJ, and Graffiti, underlines the LAB's commitment to fostering local talent and creativity. As these collectives gain access to funding and training, there is potential for increased visibility and sustainability within the hip-hop community in Pará. The Mairi Hip-Hop LAB serves not just as an incubator for artistic projects but also as a platform for strengthening cultural identity and community engagement through hip-hop.
