A Bridge Between Kharkiv and Riga - Ukrainian Designer Continues Work in Latvia After the War Begins
A Ukrainian designer, who moved to Latvia after the onset of the war, continues his work in design while connecting teams in both Ukraine and Latvia.
As the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, designer Borovko found himself on assignment in Latvia, where he has remained since 2022. His colleagues persuaded him to stay, emphasizing the need for support in their work environment. Borovko, who has worked in the design field since 2003 and previously led a team of 20 in Ukraine, now witnesses a significant reduction in his team due to the war, with only five members remaining and new recruits joining to adapt to the changing circumstances.
In Latvia, Borovko continues his design work, functioning as a crucial link between his remaining team in Ukraine and the work being done in Latvia. He reports that all Ukrainian staff are working remotely, primarily from Kharkiv, Kyiv, and surrounding areas, maintaining their operations despite the ongoing conflict. The team's focus includes urban infrastructure projects like roads and bridges, which illustrate the resilience and adaptability required in such a challenging situation.
Borovko's experience highlights the broader impact of the war on the professional lives of Ukrainians, who have had to adjust their operations while maintaining connections across borders. His ability to facilitate this transnational work exemplifies the determination of Ukrainian professionals to continue contributing to their field despite the challenges posed by the war. This story underscores the intersection of war, migration, and professional collaboration in modern Europe.
