TRE-AP recounts votes and diplomates Col. Flexa after Kaká Barbosa's censure
Col. Arnóbio Flexa Nascimento was sworn in following a recount of votes by the TRE-AP, filling the vacancy left by the censured Kaká Barbosa.
The Regional Electoral Tribunal of Amapá (TRE-AP) confirmed the election of Col. Arnóbio Flexa Nascimento from the Podemos party after a recount of the votes from the 2022 proportional elections, conducted on Tuesday, the 24th. Flexa is set to occupy the seat vacated by José Carlos Carvalho Barbosa, known as Kaká Barbosa, from the PL party, whose mandate was annulled by the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) due to vote buying allegations.
The TSE's ruling against Kaká Barbosa and another politician, Sonize Pimentel, resulted in the annulment of their electoral diplomas, both being fined R$ 10,000 and declared ineligible for eight years. The cancellation of their votes necessitated a recalculation of the electoral quotient and party quotient by the TRE-AP, which are critical formulas in determining how many seats political parties secure in proportional elections.
This recalibration drastically shifted the composition of the Amapá Legislative Assembly, allowing Col. Flexa to take up a position, reflecting the ongoing legal and political turbulence in Brazil's electoral system. The case highlights the significant consequences of illegal electoral practices as Brazil continues to grapple with integrity issues in its political landscape.
