What happened in the dangerous action between a helicopter and a Latam plane at Bogotá airport
A Latam Airbus A320 aborted its takeoff at Bogotá's international airport after a military helicopter crossed its path due to a communication failure, according to a preliminary investigation.
On Friday, an incident occurred at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá involving a Latam Airbus A320 carrying 157 passengers and five crew members, which had to abort its takeoff when a military helicopter unexpectedly crossed its flight path. The preliminary report released by the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority (Aerocivil) indicated that the incident was caused by a communication failure during the transfer of communication between the North and South Towers of the airport, which resulted in a frequency overlap with the rotary-wing aircraft.
The investigation specified that at the time of the incident, the Latam aircraft had already commenced its takeoff roll when the military helicopter entered a proximity to its trajectory on runway 14R. The crew of flight ARE4278, upon realizing the imminent danger posed by the helicopter, made the critical decision to abort the takeoff to prevent a potential collision. This timely response by the crew highlighted the importance of proper communication protocols in ensuring flight safety, particularly in busy air traffic environments.
Furthermore, Aerocivil emphasized the necessity of addressing communication lapses to avoid similar occurrences in the future. The repercussions of this incident raise concerns regarding air traffic management and the need for stricter adherence to communication procedures, underscoring the importance of safety measures in aviation operations, which can have far-reaching effects on public perception and regulatory practices within the industry.
