Russia's Military Spending Triples Compared to 2021, Momentum Slows: Military Balance
A report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) reveals that Russia's military spending has tripled since 2021, although the growth momentum has significantly slowed down.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) released its annual report titled "Military Balance 2026", which analyzes global military dynamics, on the 24th. The report assesses Russia's ongoing military strategy in the context of its invasion of Ukraine, stating that while Russia has been adapting and maintaining its military strength, it has suffered substantial losses during the ongoing conflict. Furthermore, the report highlights that despite the tripling of military spending since 2021, the real growth rate of Russia's military expenditure for 2025 is anticipated to be only 3%, a significant slowdown from last year's dramatic increase of 56.9%. This expenditure equates to more than 7.3% of Russia's GDP.
