The National Alliance must repay unlawfully used state funding - 210,673 euros
The National Alliance party in Latvia is required to repay 210,673 euros after exceeding budget limits on state funding for political communication expenses.
The National Alliance (NA), a political party in Latvia, has been ordered to repay 210,673 euros in state funding due to unlawful expenditure exceeding the permissible limit for political communication and campaigning. The decision stems from an investigation by the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB), which discovered that the NA had spent 554,627 euros in 2022 on activities that surpassed the allowed percentage for such funding as regulated by law. The NA has appealed previous court decisions that upheld the KNAB's ruling which led to the funding repayment order.
As part of the ongoing legal battle, the NA's appeal against KNAB's decision has not halted the enforcement of the agency's ruling. The administrative district court initially rejected the party's plea, compelling the NA to escalate the matter to the regional court. Meanwhile, KNAB took further action by suspending the party's access to state budget financing for a year, withholding payments amounting to 376,003 euros in July 2024, which further complicates the partyβs financial situation and could impact its political campaigning.
This situation reflects broader concerns surrounding party funding transparency and legal compliance within Latvian political parties. With taxpayers' money at stake, the case raises important questions about the accountability of political entities and the mechanisms in place to govern their financial activities. The outcome of the appeal and related court proceedings could set a precedent for how party financing is regulated in Latvia, highlighting the crucial balance between political funding and ethical governance.
