Vaca Muerta drives a new oil record and already represents 68% of production
Vaca Muerta's oil production reached a record of 882,200 barrels daily in January, now accounting for 68% of Argentina's total output.
In January, Argentina achieved a new oil production record, reaching 882,200 barrels per day, of which nearly 600,000 barrels came from the Vaca Muerta formation, now responsible for 68% of national supply. This performance is remarkable, considering that in 2015, the unconventional oil segment only contributed 4% of the country's production. The substantial increase highlights the growing importance of Vaca Muerta in the national energy landscape.
The Argentine government celebrated this milestone, noting that the production in Vaca Muerta grew by 35.5% year-on-year, which helped drive a 16.5% increase in overall oil supply. This rise is particularly significant as it compensates for the declining output from mature oil fields, especially in provinces such as Chubut and Santa Cruz, which have seen accelerated depletion of their resources. The strong performance of Vaca Muerta showcases the potential of unconventional oil production in revitalizing Argentina's energy sector.
Looking ahead, the sector aims to reach 1.5 million barrels per day by 2030, with continued investments and improvements in technology expected to foster growth. With these ambitious targets, Argentina is positioning itself to enhance its oil production capabilities, which could result in greater energy self-sufficiency and influence in the global oil market. The success of Vaca Muerta might also play a vital role in addressing key socio-economic challenges, providing jobs, and driving economic development in the region.
